The New England Society in the City of Brooklyn is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. The Society currently gives supplementary scholarships to ten graduates of Brooklyn high schools who are attending colleges in New England. It also makes awards to graduating seniors who excel in the study of history on the recommendation of their principals, assistant principals, and history teachers at public, private and parochial school throughout Brooklyn. Membership in the NES supports these programs, and dues are tax deductible.

NEW ENGLANDERS IN BROOKLYN at the beginning of a Green-Wood Cemetery tour

The Society has an active program of events, often combining a tour of interest with dinner afterward. Recent well-received events have included a tour of the Brooklyn Navy Yard followed by supper at La Nonna Restaurant in Williamsburg; a New England-focused tour of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, followed by dinner in the Museum Members Dining Room; and a new England-focused tour of Green-Wood Cemetery, followed by supper at nearby Nostro Ristorante in “Green-Wood Heights.”  These events are paid for by participants at cost.

Scholarship Winners 2016

HONORED ATTENDEES at one of the Society’s annual receptions for scholars and their families.

The Society also hosts a holiday reception for its scholarship recipients and their families at the end of the year. Refreshments are provided by the Society which also subsidizes in part its Annual Meeting and Dinner in the Spring.

The Society’s social events are a great way for younger members to get advice and discuss ideas with older, more experienced members. Among our members are practicing and retired law partners, Wall Street veterans, writers, teachers, historians, archivists, and real estate executives, Many of them would be more than willing to help younger members if asked.
